Your First Day at Apex Fitness NW: What to Expect and How to Start Strong

Walking into a new gym for the first time can feel like a big step, so first and foremost… Welcome! At Apex Fitness NW, we’re genuinely excited that you’re here and considering giving our program a try. That first day is all about setting you up for success, and a little preparation can go a long way in making the experience both positive and empowering.

One of the best things you can do is arrive about 10 to 15 minutes early. This gives you time to connect with the coach leading the class, introduce yourself, and have a quick conversation about where you’re at physically. We’ll talk through your goals, any previous experience you have, and (just as importantly) any limitations or restrictions we should be aware of. From there, we’ll walk you through the workout for the day and help you understand what to expect, including how to approach certain stations. If there are more complex movements involved, like barbell work or multi-step exercises, we’ll make sure you feel comfortable and confident in how to perform them safely before things get started.

When it comes to your actual effort level, one of the biggest keys to success is starting a little more conservatively than you might expect. Even if you have a solid fitness background, we typically recommend approaching your first class at about 70 to 75 percent effort. This style of training can be very different from what your body is used to, and we want your first experience to feel challenging in a good way—not overwhelming. That might mean choosing lighter weights than you think you need or sticking with bodyweight movements during your first round through the circuit.

As you move through that first round, the goal is simple: pay attention to how you feel. If something feels too easy, you can gradually increase the challenge. If it feels just right, you’ve found a great starting point. And if it feels like too much, that’s completely okay—we’ll adjust and find the right level for you. This process of tuning into your body is something we encourage from day one, and it becomes one of the most valuable tools you have as you progress.

Even after your first class, it’s important to keep that same mindset. If you decide to come back for more (and we hope you do). Your first couple of weeks should still be approached with care. One of the unique things about Apex is the variety in our programming. No two weeks feel exactly the same, and you’ll continue to encounter new movements and formats. Because of that, week two can feel just as fresh as week one, and it’s important to continue building your intensity gradually rather than jumping all in too quickly.

By the time you reach weeks three and four, that’s when you can start to explore pushing yourself a bit more. Maybe you increase weight at a few stations, move a little faster, or challenge yourself in new ways. But even then, the most important feedback isn’t what happens during the workout. It’s how you feel afterward and the next day. If your body feels strong, energized, and ready to come back, you’re on the right track. If something feels off, overly fatigued, or strained, that’s a sign to adjust.

It’s worth remembering that the environment at Apex is high-energy and motivating. It’s easy to get caught up in that momentum, to feel competitive, and to want to match the intensity of those around you. But the most successful athletes here, are the ones who stay consistent and make long-term progress are the ones who start slow, listen to their bodies, and build over time.

That steady, intentional approach is what allows you to not only get stronger, but to stay safe and confident in the process. And over time, as you continue to show up and stay curious about what you’re capable of, you’ll find yourself doing more than you ever expected feeling stronger, moving better, and truly becoming part of the Apex community.
